What can I give?
What we give is between us and God, nobody else need know – bar those who have to know because they are responsible for recording the gift in the accounts and claiming gift aid. It is not the size of our gift that matters to God, but the spirit in which it is given. However our giving should be regular – not the occasional one-off gift. It should be committed – laid down clearly, not a vague aspiration. Also it should be, in some sense, sacrificial – giving that does not touch us, will not change us.
That said, a rough guide to what we should give has always been the tithe (Malachi 3: 10). Christians should seriously consider giving a tithe, a tenth of their income, away. Not all the tithe need go to one’s home church, but since it is one’s immediate Christian family, the church will usually be the main recipient. Obviously for some this is more difficult than it is for others, but it is not a bad guide - and it is not meant to be exhaustive.
One thing we should not do however is compare our giving to others’ giving. In the New Testament giving is to be done in secret (Matthew 6: 2-4), and what you give will not be disclosed to anyone other than the people responsible for recording the gift and claiming gift aid.
Unless otherwise stated your giving will go into the General Fund to pay for all the items shown in the budget explained above. But you can also earmark, if you wish, all or part of your donation to go to a particular item of expenditure within the general fund budget. Then your gift will be go into an ordinary Restricted Fund such as those established for the parish worker, administration, church fabric and missions.
How can I give?
You can contribute to the church’s work by regular giving by cash/cheque in the weekly collection or direct to the PCC’s bank account by standing order. You can make one off gifts by cash/cheque/bank transfer or make a pledge to indicate a gift which you intend to make in the future. And please consider signing a Gift Aid form if you have not already done so.
Gift Aid forms, standing order forms and further details on how to give can be downloaded here. Alternatively these forms are available at the back of the church.
